Beverston
Beverston Castle is located in the village centre, off the A4135. 18 miles south of Gloucester, on the A46-A4135.
Beverston Castle was originally a medieval stone enclosure fortress or fortified manor house, defended by a wide ditch. The castle was founded by Maurice de Gaunt, in 1229 when he was granted a licence to crenellate the fortification, he had recently built. In the early 14th century, Thomas, Lord Berkeley remodelled the castle, building a small quadrangular stronghold, with a twin-towered gatehouse. Sadly after Civil War slighting, only the west range and one D-shaped tower of the gatehouse remains. The west range, which contained the solar above a vaulted undercroft, is flanked on the angles by square towers. The two storey gatehouse, had a large first floor chamber, above the interior passage which was closed by a portcullis.
